Gossip

For a very long time, I have been in awe of the innovation of technology and I can foresee tremendous upcoming growth in areas such as Augmented Reality, Data mining, Machine Learning, and Automation. Probably the most fascinating is the power of social media and the phenomena it creates. Although intended to bring people together, its platform has been used to rouse a false reality through rumors and unsubstantiated gossip which is more commonly culturally accepted. Technology is changing our values.

Whether you are on social media or not, there is a cascade of trickling information we absorb through others in conversation. It has become easier to pass along the information in a seemingly harmless manner because everyone accepts it. Gossip is a venomous bite. We know this to be true when we personally experience negative consequences. Sharing hearsay, distorting the truth, and breaking confidentiality destroy relationships and cuts to the core.

So here’s the thing, crows swirl around the woods and hunch in trees to caw about their findings. If something is going on in the woods, you can be sure the crows know about it and are more than happy to share with anyone in earshot. It is the most unpleasant sound of nature. And gives new meaning to “a little birdie told me”.

Gossip has never helped anyone, never solved a problem, and never contributed to happiness. In fact, gossip will erode your own happiness. Stop examining the weaknesses of others. Be so consumed on your personal growth and character that you have no time to criticize others. Quit criticizing others.

Exercise: Set an intention to speak honestly and recognize the impact of our words.

  1. Is it true?  Ask the subject. If you cannot approach the subject, then ask yourself what are your intentions.
  2. Am I assaulting someone’s character?
  3. Why am I sharing?
  4. What positive remarks can I make?

Talking about someone in a positive light will pull us out of the gossip mill. It takes practice and consistency. When you feel yourself slipping, just stop. You need to say nothing more. It stops with you. Let the silence speak for itself. If you must speak it - write it instead - in the sand by the water’s edge.

My Life’s Lesson: It’s not my news to share.

From the sweetest spot in my heart to yours, may you be impressive with your honesty and integrity.
