To the Graduates
Each of us has particular talents that make the world a better place. Perhaps these are things you gravitate towards in your free time, and that people respect you for. When you develop these talents as far as you can, you can make your most significant possible contribution to the world, and enjoy the satisfaction that goes along with this.
There seems to be a growing consensus that to be successful one needs to earn top grades, participate and succeed in extracurricular activities such as sports, musical clubs, academic clubs, and social justice clubs to create a well-rounded high school resume. The intention of that resume is to be admitted to a prestigious university.
Yes, academic success is essential, and all parents should want their children to be contributing community members. But there are times when the pressure of it all becomes tremendous. In my opinion, we need to encourage our kids to make a plan, find and follow their passion, to participate in a variety of activities that alleviate stress, and to take time to just have fun and enjoy life. No one ever made concrete plans to become lazy, fat, and broke. That’s what happens when you do not have a plan. So what’s your plan? My daughter and her peers are graduating next Sunday. I pretty impressed with some solid, thoughtful plans:
Kayha will make a fantastic nurse.
When Alexia returns from her gap year seeing the world, she will make a considerable difference with Environmental Policies.
Cheyenne will be a phenomenal businesswoman, raising that glass ceiling for all women.
We appreciate Kyle’s service in the United States Air force as a Drone pilot censor operator.
Dawson is headed out to study Homeland Security and exercise science. as well as play football. The ROTC will also keep him very busy.
Destinee is headed right into the workforce, and I’m sure I’ll see her cheerful face around the community.
Susan will work as a CNA, which she earned as a Senior at our vocational program. She will continue her college studies in Health Science.
Brooke and Tim are working on general studies and figuring it out.
That’s a good sampling of the really fantastic life decisions.
So here’s the thing, The plans you have now may scare you in August. Do not quit. Do what scares you. Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try. You are more capable than you know.
Exercise:
Complete this sentence, “When my life is ideal, I am ___.” The word(s) you choose to fill in the blank must be a verb. When my life is ideal, I am of service to others. I am making people laugh. I am speaking a truth that resonates with others.
Ponder this:
What do you love to do?
What comes easily to you?
What makes you laugh?
My Life’s Lesson: Do what sets your soul on fire. When you follow your passion, there is your purpose. And just so you know, you cannot fake passion or love.
From the sweetest spot in my heart to yours, may you have a fantastic week!
